The Art of the Color Wheel: Why I Still Hand-Mix Cosmetics After 15 Years

There is something special about creating beauty with your hands.

Not just applying it.

For more than 15 years, I have worked in the beauty industry as a makeup artist, esthetician, and cosmetic formulator. I have worked on countless faces, tested countless products, mixed countless colors, and learned something I believe every beauty professional eventually understands:

Color is never just color.

It is undertone. It is light. It is texture. It is chemistry. It is skin. It is personality.

And sometimes, the perfect color does not come from a factory.

Sometimes, you have to make it yourself.

My love affair with the color wheel

One of the things I love most about makeup and cosmetic formulation is the art of color theory.

The color wheel is something I use constantly — whether I am creating a custom makeup look for a client, adjusting a shade, developing a product, or hand-mixing something in my studio.

Red, yellow, and blue create the foundation.

From there, endless possibilities begin.

A little yellow can warm something up.

A touch of blue can cool it down.

Red can deepen and intensify.

Opposite colors can neutralize each other.

And the smallest adjustment can completely change the final result.

This is why I have always been fascinated by hand-mixing cosmetics.

I can start with a color that is close, but not quite right. Maybe it is too warm. Too pink. Too orange. Too dull.

Then I begin to adjust.

A tiny bit of this.

A touch of that.

A little more pigment.

A little more balance.

And suddenly, the color comes alive.

That moment never gets old.

Hand mixing is part science and part art

When people see me mixing cosmetics, they sometimes think it looks simple.

And honestly, that is part of what I love about it.

The process can look effortless.

But behind that process is years of learning, testing, understanding ingredients, observing color, and developing an instinct for what needs to change.

Formulating and hand-mixing cosmetics is part science and part art.

You have to understand how ingredients work together.

You have to understand color.

You have to understand how products feel on the skin.

You have to understand what people actually want to wear.

And then you have to be willing to experiment.

That is where the magic happens.

Why I love what I do

I love that no two days in my business are exactly the same.

One day I may be working with a bride.

Another day I may be creating a new cosmetic product.

Another day I may be hand-mixing a shade, testing a formula, packing orders, teaching a class, creating content, or talking with a customer about what will work best for her.

I love the creativity.

I love the problem-solving.

I love the connection.

And I love that beauty can make someone feel like themselves — only a little more confident.

That has always been the part that matters most to me.

15 years later, I feel like I am just getting started

I launched my career as a professional makeup artist more than 15 years ago.

SMACKbyKarisa came from that same passion for beauty, creativity, and creating products that people actually want to use.

Over the years, I have grown, learned, changed, experimented, made mistakes, tried again, and continued to evolve.

I have created products.

I have worked with clients.

I have built relationships.

I have learned the business side of entrepreneurship.

And I have continued to make things with my own hands.

That is something I never want to lose.

Because even after 15 years, I still feel like I am just beginning.

There is still another product to create.

Another color to mix.

Another formula to improve.

Another idea to try.

Another person to make feel beautiful.

The beauty of making something yourself

We live in a world where almost everything can be mass-produced.

And there is absolutely a place for that.

But there is something different about a product that began with an idea, a color, a formula, and a pair of hands.

That is what handmade beauty means to me.

It means paying attention.

It means making adjustments.

It means caring about the details.

It means not being afraid to say, “This could be better.”

And then trying to make it better.

That is the same philosophy I bring to SMACKbyKarisa.

I want my products to be fun, personal, effective, and made with intention.

I want beauty to feel luxurious but approachable.
